A rare cause of embolism in the popliteal artery of an adolescent: ruptured cardiac hydatid cyst

چکیده
A 17-year-old male presented to the emergency department with complaints of pain, paleness, and coldness in his left leg. In the peripheral angiography, total occlusion in the left popliteal artery was observed with distal collateral filling (Fig. 1). On the thoracic CT, a bilobular ruptured cystic lesion 0.9 × 2.7 cm in size in the interventricular septum partially extended to the left ventricle (Fig. 2). The patient was admitted to emergency surgery. A capsule consistent with a hydatid cyst was removed from the popliteal artery, which was confirmed pathologically (Fig. 3). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of popliteal artery embolism in an adolescent patient because of rupture of cardiac hydatid cyst. In cases of vascular embolism developing suddenly in the extremities, it will be useful to consider ruptured cardiac hydatid cyst in the differential diagnosis, particularly in endemic regions.

Pulmonary Embolism as a Rare Complication of Liver Hydatid Cyst: Report of Two Cases
Hydatid cyst is a helminth infection. The rupture of a hepatic hydatid cyst in inferior vena cava is a rare and lethal complication. Pulmonary embolism is the commonest manifestation. The diagnosis of hydatid cyst is made by histopathological or serological examination, and imaging may suggest the probability of hydatid cyst. Surgical treatment should be performed with caution and always under ...
متن کاملACUTE LOWER LIMB ISCHEMIA DUE TO FEMOROPOPLITEAL EMBOLISM OF HYDATID CYST
In addition to the liver, human hydatidosis has been reported in the lung, brain, abdominal viscera, muscles, and heart chambers. Infarction of the brain has also been documented. Arterial embolism of the lower extremities by hydatid cyst, however, is extremely rare. In the presented case, acute ischemia of the patient's left leg led to gangrene and amputation. Complete workup for localizat...
متن کاملA cardiac hydatid cyst underlying pulmonary embolism: a case report
Hydatid cysts located in the interatrial septum are especially rare but when they occur, they might cause intracavity rupture. We report on a patient with acute pulmonary embolism caused by an isolated, ruptured hydatid cyst on the right side of the interatrial septum. A 16-year-old-boy with an uneventful history was hospitalized for exercise-induced dyspnea and blood expectorations. Multiple a...
متن کاملA rare presentation of cardiac hydatid cyst: stroke and acute aortic occlusion.
Cardiac involvement in hydatid disease is uncommon. We report a case of a surgically treated ruptured left ventricular hydatid cyst, which presented with acute stroke and was later complicated by distal aortic embolism due to perioperative dislodgement of the germinative membrane.
متن کاملMiddle cerebral artery occlusion due to hydatid cysts of myocardial and intraventricular cavity cardiac origin. Two cases.
BACKGROUND Hemispheric strokes of hydatid origin are very rare. We describe two cases of middle cerebral artery occlusion by a cyst of cardiac origin. CASE DESCRIPTIONS Cerebral angiography demonstrated occlusion of the initial segment of the middle cerebral artery. Myocardial and pericardial cysts were diagnosed by echography and pathological examination. Subsequent development of hydatid cy...
